In the marine environment, population genetic structure and connectivity are influenced by a complex interplay between biotic factors and the three-dimensional fluid environment that organisms inhabit. The field of seascape genomics provides insights into how life history traits interact with environmental features to shape evolutionary processes.
On coral reefs, commercially valuable fishery species are disproportionately understudied. Therefore, Galvez’s thesis will employ a multispecies framework to investigate the patterns, drivers, and consequences of genetic structure in co-distributed, commercially harvested species on Belize’s Mesoamerican barrier reef system.
Collectively, Galvez’s work will fill a knowledge gap in multispecies seascape genomics of harvested species and support the development of more holistic marine conservation strategies in the Mesoamerican region.
