Research:

I have worked on a range of problems in population, community, and evolutionary ecology. Over the last decade, I have primarily worked on optimal foraging behaviour under predation risk, the coevolution of interacting species, the interaction of species in variable environments, and the evolution of traits that have frequency-dependent effects on fitness. The majority of my research explores interactions between species, although I have also worked on a diverse array of within-species problems ranging from the evolution of anisogamy to the evolution of senescence. A good deal of my current work is devoted to exploring the population dynamics and evolution of species that respond behaviourally to what other individuals in their own and interacting species are doing. A simple case is the 'behavioural response race' between predators and prey in which prey attempt to evade predators and predators try to find prey. I am also exploring the implications of behavioural adaptation and co-adaptation for applied ecology--both fisheries management and conservation biology. I have also been particularly concerned with the nature of interactions between and evolution of species in variable environments.
