Recognition of Excellence in Teaching: Associate Professor Shelby Riskin
The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology is proud to celebrate the achievements of Associate Professor Shelby Riskin, Teaching Stream who has been named a recipient of both the 2024–25 Cheryl Regehr Early Career Teaching Award and the Faculty of Arts & Science Outstanding Teaching Award – Early Career.

The Regehr Award recognizes faculty members who are effective teachers and who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to student learning, pedagogical engagement, and teaching innovation.
The Faculty of Arts & Science Outstanding Teaching Award — Early Career recognizes teaching excellence in undergraduate and graduate education with a focus on classroom instruction and course design and/or curriculum development among early career faculty.
Shelby’s teaching portfolio spans a diverse array of subjects, from ecosystem ecology and conservation biology to plants and society. Her courses are distinguished by their integration of current scientific research, experiential learning, and inclusive pedagogical practices. She employs evidence based teaching strategies such as flipped classrooms, inquiry based fieldwork, and authentic research experiences to foster critical thinking and scientific literacy among undergraduate students.
