Abstract:
We study how genetic variation is maintained, how it is spatially distributed, and how it changes over time in natural populations. Using demographic, movement and genetic data collected over 20 years from a metapopulation of an alpine butterfly, we have recently been exploring the interplay between repeated demographic bottlenecks and spatially limited gene flow. Our work reveals rapid and cyclic shifts in genetic variation over time in response to these competing processes.
