Prospective Students:

I am currently accepting new students. Applicants interested in the above research topics or motivated to use fungi to study related questions are encouraged to contact me. Please send your most recent CV and a brief research statement (less than 1 page) summarizing your research interests and experience to yanxw.wang@utoronto.ca.

Research

I am broadly interested in the genomic evolution of fungi. I seek to understand the genetic make-up of fungal symbionts and how they have adapted to their host environments over evolutionary timescales. The research program in my laboratory primarily uses fungi and insects to study adaptation, evolution, host-microbe interactions, and host specificity by integrating modern genomic approaches with traditional phylogenetic methods. Current research projects include:

  1. Assembling high-quality fungal genomes using long-read sequencing data
  2. Developing phylogenomic markers for molecular systematics of early-diverging fungi
  3. Investigating population genomic structure of insect-associated fungi
  4. Examining experimental evolution and gene expression preference of insect gut-dwelling fungi
